Painting small studies is something I can lose myself in. Playing around with colour, shapes and texture on a small scale is somehow freeing. I usually spend a bit of time with studies to investigate the interaction between elements, composition and overall feel, before committing to painting the piece on a larger scale. These are all unique, original paintings by me, generally painted with acrylics (sometimes mixed media) on offcut archival watercolour paper or canvas. In WA it’s easy to see the transition from limestone to sand, and then the incredible luminosity of clear water sitting on the whiteness of crushed cliffs. Then you add the beautiful and subtle greens of the scraggly scrub hanging onto the edges. It’s exquisite.
