Painting small studies is something I can lose myself in. Playing around with colour, shapes and texture on a small scale is somehow freeing. I usually spend a bit of time with studies to investigate the interaction between elements, composition and overall feel, before committing to painting the piece on a larger scale. These are all unique, original paintings by me, generally painted with acrylics (sometimes mixed media) on offcut archival watercolour paper or canvas. The light can be different in different states. It definitely is in the Victorian Yarra Ranges and Valley areas, especially in Winter. I’m always so taken by the patterns of dappled light on the ground as it filters through these towering gums. Perfection.
