Painting small studies is something I can lose myself in. Playing around with colour, shapes and texture on a small scale is somehow freeing. I usually spend a bit of time with studies to investigate the interaction between elements, composition and overall feel, before committing to painting the piece on a larger scale. These are all unique, original paintings by me, generally painted with acrylics (sometimes mixed media) on offcut archival watercolour paper or canvas. This gum was sitting out on its own away from all of the others. It made me think about how trees communicate underground using their roots and some sort of fungal growth. Trees really are amazing. This one also had a lot of red in it, so I had to paint it.
