Studies

Painting small studies is something I can lose myself in. Playing around with colour, shapes and texture on a small scale is somehow freeing. I usually spend a bit of time with studies to investigate the interaction between elements, composition and overall feel, before committing to painting the piece on a larger scale. These are all unique, original paintings by me, generally painted with acrylics (sometimes mixed media) on offcut archival watercolour paper or canvas. My 90 year old mother has just been diagnosed with cancer. She walks a kilometre or so everyday to feed carrots to a retired racecourse. She said something once that has informed my life in the most profound way…”No matter what, NEVER lose your sense of wonder. She and I walk past this on the way there. It’s all beautiful. And yes, I am crying while I write this.
