Painting small studies is something I can lose myself in. Playing around with colour, shapes and texture on a small scale is somehow freeing. I usually spend a bit of time with studies to investigate the interaction between elements, composition and overall feel, before committing to painting the piece on a larger scale. These are all unique, original paintings by me, generally painted with acrylics (sometimes mixed media) on offcut archival watercolour paper or canvas. Gum trees aren’t my usual subject but the way the light hits them, those subtle colours, the shadows cast by gum leaves, PLUS the fact that I am an Australian painter, makes it an obligation to paint them. A joyful, wondrous obligation.
