Studies

Painting small studies is something I can lose myself in. Playing around with colour, shapes and texture on a small scale is somehow freeing. I usually spend a bit of time with studies to investigate the interaction between elements, composition and overall feel, before committing to painting the piece on a larger scale. These are all unique, original paintings by me, generally painted with acrylics (sometimes mixed media) on offcut archival watercolour paper or canvas. I’m really taken by the patterns on gum trees.There’s some lovely greys, but what is particularly compelling is both the way the light hits it, but the tannins that leak out of the trunk, staining it.Anywhere the bark is opened, these beautiful reds run down the trunk.Super interesting (and tougher to paint well than you might think).
