Painting small studies is something I can lose myself in. Playing around with colour, shapes and texture on a small scale is somehow freeing. I usually spend a bit of time with studies to investigate the interaction between elements, composition and overall feel, before committing to painting the piece on a larger scale. These are all unique, original paintings by me, generally painted with acrylics (sometimes mixed media) on offcut archival watercolour paper or canvas. In this particular place the Northern NSW red soil continues almost to the water’s edge. There were these lovely spots where that little bit of red sits against the ocean, flanked by banksia trees. It’s a nice place to sit and think. But also the colours make it lovely to paint.
